That doyenne of Jungians, Maria von Franz, has this to say:

The great question is whether the field of the collective unconscious is such an arbitrary
random pattern of archetypes – or does it have some order? Jung has already pointed
out that among the different archetypes, there is one which encompasses and regulates
all the others, and that is the archetype of the Self. . .It is the most powerful archetype,
the one which arranges and regulates the relationships of all the others.

Editor: I consider that the deepest question regarding all layers of synchronicity is to
answer the question “Who am I, in relationship to the Other? What is the relationship
between my conscious self and the Self of the Whole?”

In our thinking about meaningful coincidence, synchronicity, we might well add in this
idea of the Self..  perhaps the Divine Self..  and thus emphasise a personal view of it
all and avoid any suggestion of the process being machine-like.
